Antwerp-Bruges or Rotterdam? A Routing Comparison

Europe's two largest container gateways sit a short drive apart, and consumer-goods exporters load from both. This is an honest account of what actually separates them for FMCG cargo — and how a shipper decides, load by load, rather than once and forever.

Our warehousing is at Aalter in East Flanders, roughly midway between the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and the Port of Rotterdam. That is a genuine operational advantage rather than a marketing line: it means the gateway is a booking decision on each shipment instead of a fixed constraint we have to route every buyer around. It also means we have watched the same cargo go both ways often enough to be sceptical of the confident answers published elsewhere.

Most comparison pages on this subject rank the two ports by throughput and stop. Throughput is a real published statistic and it tells you almost nothing about what your consignment of confectionery will cost or when it will arrive. What follows is the comparison as a shipper experiences it — where the two gateways genuinely differ, where they do not, and which questions to put to whoever is quoting you.

Why the gateway is a smaller variable than buyers expect

The instinct is to treat the port as the decision. In practice, for a container of consumer goods leaving Belgium or the Netherlands, four things usually outrank it: which carrier serves your destination and on what service string; whether your cargo fills a box or shares one; how far the goods travel by road before they reach the quay; and how quickly the document set can be assembled. The port choice sits underneath all four rather than above them.

That is why an experienced forwarder will ask about your destination and your volume before mentioning a port at all. A buyer in the Gulf taking full containers and a buyer in West Africa taking a shared pallet position are solving different problems, and the second one's answer is far more likely to be dictated by where a consolidator happens to be building a box that week.

None of which makes the ports interchangeable. They differ in geography, in what their terminals are built around, and in how the inland network behind them is shaped. Those differences show up as cost and as reliability, just not in the way a throughput table implies.

Two geographies: a river gateway and a coastal one

The physical difference is the starting point for almost everything else. Antwerp's docks lie inland along the river Scheldt; vessels reach them by transiting the estuary from the North Sea, and the deepest docks are entered through locks — among them the Kieldrecht and Berendrecht locks, which are among the largest ever built. Rotterdam's deep-sea container terminals sit at Maasvlakte, on reclaimed land projecting into the North Sea itself, with direct access and no river passage.

Two consequences follow. First, a call at Antwerp costs a vessel more time than a call at Rotterdam, which is one reason Rotterdam tends to appear earlier in a rotation and why very large vessels favour it. Second, Antwerp's inland position puts the quay physically closer to a large part of the European consuming and manufacturing hinterland, which shortens the road leg for cargo originating in Flanders, northern France and the Rhine-Scheldt corridor.

Since the merger of the port companies of Antwerp and Bruges in 2022, the Belgian side is a single authority operating two platforms. The Zeebrugge platform is a coastal port on the North Sea, historically strongest in roll-on/roll-off traffic, new vehicles and short-sea links, and it is a different proposition again from the Antwerp docks — worth knowing about if your cargo moves on trailers to the United Kingdom or Ireland rather than in a deep-sea box.

Rotterdam's own shape matters too. It is a very large energy and bulk port with a container business attached, and its container operation is concentrated seaward at Maasvlakte. That concentration is efficient for the vessel and adds distance at the landward end: cargo trucked from East Flanders travels further to reach a Maasvlakte terminal than to reach an Antwerp one.

What actually differs

Six things that separate the two for consumer goods

Not throughput. These are the variables that change what an FMCG shipment costs and how predictable it is.

Service coverage by lane

Both gateways are served by every major alliance and by the independent operators that matter on North-South trades. Coverage is broadly comparable and it changes with each schedule revision, so treat any claim that one port simply serves your market better as something to verify against a carrier's current schedule rather than accept.

Groupage and consolidation depth

Both have dense forwarding and consolidation clusters, but they are not the same cluster. A specific consolidator running a weekly box to your destination sits at one of them, not both. For part-load cargo this single fact usually overrides every other consideration on this page.

Road drayage from Flanders

For cargo originating in East Flanders the Antwerp run is the shorter one, and shorter drayage means a lower haulage bill and a smaller exposure to congestion on the day. For cargo already sitting in the Netherlands the arithmetic reverses. Drayage is the cost line most often left out of a port comparison.

Rail into the hinterland

Rotterdam has the Betuweroute, a dedicated freight railway running to the German border, opened on the Dutch side in 2007. Antwerp is connected to the same European network by conventional lines. For export FMCG leaving Europe this rarely matters; for import cargo continuing into Germany and beyond it can matter a great deal.

Barge on the Rhine and Scheldt

Both gateways are barge ports. Rotterdam sits at the mouth of the Rhine and Meuse, which is the classic corridor into Germany and Switzerland; Antwerp works the Scheldt and the canal network into Flanders and northern France. Barge is slower than road and materially cheaper, and it is under-used by FMCG shippers moving between EU points.

Congestion behaviour

Neither port is reliably congested and neither is reliably clear. What differs is how disruption presents: a river port can queue at the estuary and the locks, a seaward terminal queues at the gate and the yard. Either way you learn about it through your haulier's turn-times, not through a published figure.

Groupage: where the part-load question really bites

If you are shipping full containers, the gateway is a cost and schedule optimisation and you have real freedom to choose. If you are shipping a few pallets, you have much less freedom than you think, and pretending otherwise is how part-load shipments end up sitting in a warehouse waiting for a box that is never quite full.

Groupage works by aggregation. A consolidator fills a container for a given destination on a repeating cycle, and your pallets travel when that box closes. Whether a suitable box exists at all — and where it is being stuffed — depends on trade lane, season and the consolidator's own book, none of which is a property of the port. So the honest sequence for part-load cargo is: find the service, then accept the gateway that comes with it.

Full container loads invert that. With a full box you hold the booking, and the gateway becomes a straightforward comparison of drayage, terminal handling and the sailing that fits your date. This is one of the underrated arguments for consolidating your own order into a full container across several categories — mixing Italian roast and ground coffee and other coffee and tea lines with personal care and sauces and condiments rather than taking pallets of each on separate part-loads. Which corridors tend to suit which gateway

This section is deliberately expressed as tendencies, because schedules change and a rule of thumb that is right this quarter can be wrong next quarter. Treat it as a starting hypothesis to check, not as a routing instruction.

West and Central Africa. Both gateways are well served, and Antwerp has a long-established trading and forwarding community oriented to these lanes, which tends to show up as depth of groupage options rather than as a faster sailing. For part-load cargo to this region, ask about Antwerp first — but ask, rather than assume.

The Gulf, South Asia and Southeast Asia. These are mainline lanes and the largest vessels dominate them, which favours the terminals those vessels call at. Rotterdam frequently sits earlier in a rotation. For full containers the difference is usually a matter of a sailing rather than of service availability.

North and Latin America and the Caribbean. Coverage is good from both. Here the determining factor is nearly always the individual carrier's string and its transhipment pattern, because a direct call and a transhipped routing behave very differently even when the headline transit looks similar.

Intra-European and UK moves. Frequently neither port is involved at all. Road transport under a CMR consignment note to Germany, France, Poland or Spain bypasses the question entirely, and trailer traffic to the UK and Ireland points at the Zeebrugge platform and the other short-sea ports rather than at a deep-sea container terminal.

Landlocked and secondary destinations. Where the destination is served through a hub with an onward feeder, the feeder connection dominates and the European gateway is close to irrelevant. Ask which hub, which feeder and how often, and the port question answers itself.

When the service string outranks the gateway

There is a category of shipment where optimising the port is simply the wrong exercise. If your destination is served by one carrier on one weekly string, that string decides your routing, your transit and your reliability, and the port is whatever the string calls at. Choosing the other gateway to save a modest amount on drayage while adding a week to the transit is a bad trade that looks like a saving on a spreadsheet.

The same applies when your cargo has a physical constraint. Temperature-sensitive lines — chocolate, some cosmetic formats — are governed by season, stow position and total time in the box far more than by which quay they left from. Dangerous-goods classified items such as aerosols within a household and cleaning range narrow the carrier options first, and the gateway follows the carrier. Where a consignment has a hard date at the far end, the sailing that meets the date wins regardless of which terminal it leaves from.

The useful conclusion is not that the port never matters. It is that the port is a second-order variable that you optimise after the carrier, the load structure and the cargo constraints are settled — and that any supplier who leads with a port preference before asking about those things is telling you about their own operation, not about your shipment.

What to ask before you accept a routing

Whether you are talking to us, to a forwarder or to another supplier, these questions separate a considered routing from a habitual one.

  • Which carrier and which service string, and is it a direct call or transhipped — and if transhipped, at which hub?
  • Is my cargo a full container or a part-load, and if it is a part-load, whose consolidation box is it joining and how often does that box close?
  • What is the road leg from the origin warehouse to the terminal, and who is paying for it under the agreed Incoterm?
  • What is being assumed about terminal handling charges at each end, and are they inside or outside the quoted rate?
  • If the sailing is missed, what is the fallback — the next call of the same string, or a different gateway entirely?
  • Does anything about the cargo — temperature sensitivity, dangerous-goods classification, high value — restrict the carrier or the stow before the port is even considered?

The answers tend to make the choice for you. Where they do not, the gateway genuinely is a toss-up, and the right response is to take whichever sailing suits your date. Checking the published figures for yourself

We have deliberately not quoted throughput volumes, sailing frequencies or transit times on this page. All three are published, all three change, and a comparison built on numbers copied from a competitor's blog is worse than no comparison at all. If you want the current figures, take them from the source and date them.

Both port authorities publish their own cargo statistics: the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and the Port of Rotterdam. Eurostat's maritime transport statistics allow a like-for-like comparison across EU ports on a common methodology. For anything about services and timings, the carriers' own published schedules are the only source worth using — port-level averages tell you nothing about the specific string your box will travel on.
